Do you have a child who wants to learn the drums?
For the beginner drummer the most inexpensive, cheap and easy way for a child to begin learning the drums is to purchase a rubber Practice Pad (14" double-sided)
together with a pair of drumsticks which should cost under £50. Choosing the right size drumsticks depends upon the size of the hands but, as a guide, for most children between the ages of 7 and 13 a size 7a or Vic Firth 5A American Hickory Wood Tip Drumstick
would be ideal. The Vic Firth Nova 7A Hickory Drumsticks
is for the smaller hand and 5a for the bigger. For teenagers onwards a Vic Firth American Classic 5B Wood Tip
would cover most musical situations. If you have large hands you may be more comfortable with the thicker Vic Firth 2B American Hickory Wood Tip Drumstick.
There are many makes to choose from but the Vic Firth stick has proven very reliable.
Proper grip and technique should be practiced on the pad first before transferring to the drum kit. This is very important for a beginner drummer because you can clearly hear the strokes as they are being played and therefore any mistakes are easier to spot. Also the pads rubber material helps obtain more stick bounce compared to the stick bounce from a drum. Please see the Accessories page for more information on practice pads.
Time invested early on these practice aids will pay dividends later as it will help you to build a strong technique and clarity to your playing when transferred to the drum set. Good drum tuition from a highly recommended drum tutor will guide you through this process.
Once your child is up and running with the practice pad and shows a keen interest in drumming, you can look towards investing in their first drum kit.
